Travel Purpose: leisure

Positive: Lovely cosy place. Clean and warm with super comfy beds and a good shower. Great base for exploring the Dales, parking space outside so easy to load and unload. Lounge is cosy and warm, with comfy sofas and a nice log burning fire. One bag of logs and one bag of kindling is provided which we were grateful for. There are board games and some good information on what's available in the local area. There's a fantastic pub and restaurant just up the road called the CB Inn. We had a fabulous dinner there and the staff are fantastic and made us feel very welcome. Don't bother with the Red Lion if you are travelling as a family because the land lady wouldn't let us inside with our children (sensible kids aged 7 and 10) despite it being minus 2 outside. This can't be related to licensing laws so must just be her preference. I note from the sign on the door that she also does not permit dogs inside the pub which seems odd for a rural inn. The shower in the cottage is lovely, the towels soft and fluffy and the whole place a lovely comfortable temperature. For breakfast, the Dales Bike Centre at Grinton is excellent and they also do some pretty wonderful cakes. Reeth has a nice selection of little shops and there are some amazing walks that start at the river right outside the cottage door which is fab.

Negative: Check in is 4pm which is really late even by modern accommodation standards. I asked for a slightly earlier check in but was told no. The kitchen space is super tiny. There's a microwave that doubles as a combi oven but it would be difficult to do any "proper" cooking due to the lack of workspace. There is a toaster and an air fryer, so quick meals and snacks would be easily achievable. The fridge has a small freezer space at the top but not large enough to store much. We had bought frozen pizzas for our first evening due to the late check in, but had to cook them one at a time in the microwave/combi oven which added to the adventure!
